Long auger bits are usually in the neighborhood of 17" long, and are
typically have a hex shank and a larger diameter than a standard drill
bits. Auger bits are often designed with the intent of drilling through
the occasional embedded nail, making them great for work with reclaimed
wood or remodeling. Many auger pits are also self feeding, which means
they are designed to pull themselves through the workpiece as they are
drilling, which reduces the operator effort necessary to use them.
